The next principle I'm going to talk about is Respect. Again I love this idea, that's how a lot of these principles were for me though, made lots and lots of sense as I read them. Plus they're all ones that I can use lots of work on.
This principle is pretty self-explanatory. Kohn talks about how we all need to show our kids proper respect, otherwise when we're wondering why they're not respecting others we can make sure we're not the ones to blame.
One quote I liked from his book talks about how even parents who obviously love their kids are guilty of "interrupting their kids in a way they wouldn’t dream of doing with another adult, yet they become incensed when their kids interrupt them." (1) Since reading this the first time I've made sure to let a child speak to me before speaking myself. This I related back to how Heavenly Father is willing to listen to us as we pray and doesn't interrupt us so that we can have the faith to keep on praying.
A scripture I also thought of that shows Christ respecting someone is the story of Lazarus found in John 11, instead of dismissing the feelings of Mary and Martha, Christ instead weeps with them and then after a little while calls Lazarus forth from the tomb.
